[Workshop Wednesday] All the Hits

Welcome back to TwistedSpoon Studio! Workshop Wednesday is where we share custom Magic designs and discuss the process behind them. This week, I thought it would be fun to look back at the Workshops that we've done so far!

Cost Lands

    Lands? With Costs? Witchcraft!

This was the first Workshop Wednesday and the design that inspired the series. Cost lands were extremely divisive, but the response was net positive. If you want to learn more about the design space, you can find the original workshop here.

Prophecy

On the other end of the spectrum, prophecy was very well received. My old college roommate-- the infamous Zuberan, for those in the know-- and I came up with this a while back, but this workshop explored the design space and found some interesting places it could go. You can find the original article here.

Backup

These designs demonstrated the power of flavor, elevating a well-received mechanic into the stratosphere by connecting it to a beloved franchise. Funny enough, I didn't originally design these with Call of Duty in mind-- but you can read more about the motivations behind Backup here.

Unchained

Unchained originally represented mobile fortresses (not Gundam, but not not Gundam), but went through several iterations that before landing here. Coming to a toughness-matters set near you! (Or not.) You can read the full story here.

Cyberpunk Edition

Leading up to Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty, we released not one, not two, but three takes on cyberpunk mechanics! As an IT professional IRL, I had a lot of fun with this one. You can check out the article here.

Suits

Suits were another sci-fi-themed mechanic, this time intended for a Two-Headed Giant and/or Preconstructed Commander product. With Warhammer 40k Commander coming eventually, I thought it would be fun to reskin a mechanic that we considered for FUR way back in Exploratory design. You can see more here.

Tragedy

I love the Miracle mechanic from Avacyn Restored. I also really loved Morbid from OG Innistrad. So I made an "evil" version of Miracle that was... pretty morbid! You can read the article here.

Embody

That brings us to the most recent workshop, an Elemental-themed mechanic. I wanted a way to make land creatures without the baggage, and after a couple iterations, we landed here. You can find out more (like why it's an enchantment creature) here.

Just the Classics

That's all for this week. I hope you enjoyed this trip down memory lane! Which mechanic was your favorite? What are your favorite mechanics that you've made?

As a reminder, Festival of Urbestia is on hiatus, so there won't be another article this week. for updates when new articles drop, as well as news on FUR, follow us at r/TwistedSpoonStudio! Next week we'll be back with another Workshop, so stay tuned.

See you soon!
